Fukawa Youkei

Based in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Fukawa Youkei is one of Japan’s leading specialized poultry cooperatives, producing approximately six million broiler chickens annually, which is around 80% of the prefecture’s total output. The company manages the entire production chain, from raising parent stock and hatching eggs to rearing chicks, processing, packaging, and selling poultry products. It has also developed enduring products such as Keiran Senbei, a famous Yamaguchi confection made with eggs, and Chicken Hero, a frozen karaage product beloved as a local soul food.
Founded in 1948 as the first specialized poultry cooperative in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Fukawa Youkei was initially led by Jiro Suenaga, grandfather of the company’s current representative, Mr. Suenaga. After qualifying as a veterinarian, Mr. Suenaga began taking part in the company’s management in the 1980s. Following more than a decade of research into selective breeding and rearing methods, he became president in 2008 at the age of 49.
By 1951, Fukawa Youkei accounted for 70% of the prefecture’s egg shipments. In 1953, the company began producing Keiran Senbei as a way to make effective use of cracked and substandard eggs. The product went on to win the President’s Award at the 17th National Confectionery Exposition in 1968, establishing its reputation as a regional specialty. Since then, its popularity has continued to grow, supported by the automation of its manufacturing processes and expanded distribution through consumer cooperatives.
Fukawa Youkei entered the confectionery business in the 1970s, initially undertaking contract manufacturing. In the 1990s, the company relocated and expanded its factory, broadening its lineup to include Western-style sweets such as cakes and expanding its sales channels to gift specialty stores. In 2025, the company upgraded the batter-filling machinery at its confectionery plant for its Western-style cake production. The increased production capacity opened up new opportunities for product development, leading to the launch of Tamago Cake. Designed to offer a more handcrafted feel than the company’s traditional long-shelf-life products, Tamago Cake is sold exclusively at Torine Fukawa, the company’s on-site direct sales shop.
As Fukawa Youkei approaches its 80th anniversary, the company is looking ahead to its centennial and developing a vision for the future. Building on the history and trust it has cultivated over the years, Fukawa Youkei aims to continue bringing joy to the local community by creating foods that are an essential part of everyday life while responding to increasingly diverse consumer needs.
